چکیده

The human immune system limits invasion of foreign organisms and eliminates foreign cells. Discrimination between self and foreign structures is essential in this process. Ability to recognize ‘‘self’’ and limit ‘‘auto’’-immune responses against selfantigens is defined as tolerance. In many situations, the mechanisms either inducing or maintaining tolerance are disrupted. This breakdown leads to activation of autoreactive cells which, in turn, may initiate overt autoimmune disease.

Cross-talks between the kidneys and the central nervous system in multiple sclerosis

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an inflammatory demyelinating disease, which is considered as a common autoimmune disorder in young adults. A growing number of evidences indicated that the impairment in non-neural tissues plays a significant role in pathology of MS disease. There are bidirectional relationship, metabolic activities and functional similarity between central nervous system (CNS) and k...

A case of tubulointerstitial nephritis in IgG4-related systemic disease with markedly enlarged kidneys

IgG4-related systemic disease, including autoimmune pancreatitis, is a multi-organ disorder characterized by elevated serum immunoglobulin G4 (IgG4) concentration and IgG4-positive plasma cell infiltration. We report the case of a 67-year-old man with IgG4-related tubulointerstitial nephritis, presenting with markedly enlarged kidneys and renal dysfunction. The serum IgG4 level was elevated wit...

Cutting Edge: Nanogel-Based Delivery of an Inhibitor of CaMK4 to CD4+ T Cells Suppresses Experimental Autoimmune Encephalomyelitis and Lupus-like Disease in Mice.

Treatment of autoimmune diseases is still largely based on the use of systemically acting immunosuppressive drugs, which invariably cause severe side effects. Calcium/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase IV is involved in the suppression of IL-2 and the production of IL-17. Its pharmacologic or genetic inhibition limits autoimmune disease in mice. In this study, we demonstrate that KN93, a small...

Light and electron microscope studies of organs and tissues of the New Zealand Black (NZB/BL) strain mice with lymphoid leukemia and autoimmune disease.

Light microscope studies of organs and tissues of 10to 12month-old leukemic NZB/BL strain mice revealed changes characteristic of lymphoid leukemia and autoimmune disease. Electron microscope studies of ultrathin sections of lymph nodes, spleen, liver, bone marrow, thymus gland, kidneys, and lungs of the same leukemic mice demonstrated immature and mature murine leukemia virus particles of the ...
